  Murallas de Pamplona

Pamplona, the fortress

The fortified city of Pamplona, built between the 16th and 18th centuries, is one of the best preserved bastions in the whole of Europe.
It fell into decline in the 19th century owing to its ineffectiveness against the advances made in artillery and major demographic growth, which demanded the extension of the urban area. Pamplona celebrated the demolishing of part of its walls

from 1915 to 1921 as a major event. Since 2005, the City Council has been promoting a major plan of action for the recovery of the entire fortified area and an improvement in its immediate surroundings. The walls of Pamplona, in their day considered to be a barrier owing to their defensive function, are now a place for relaxation and an integrating element in the cultural and environmental heritage of the city.
